A STUDY ON THE ACCELERATION PHENOMENA IN KOREAN CHILDREN

Abstract
Since 1919 statistical datas of the height and weight of the Korean students have been reported by many investigators in various years. Author analysed these statistical datas of the height and weight for the purpose to study the chlildren¢¥s growth acceleration phenomena in Korea during the period of last 45years.
Author also studied the monarch in Korea during the last 45 years.
The influences of geographic and social factors and Korean war on the children¢¥s growth acceleration phenomena in Korea were also investigated. The data of growth acceleration phenomena in Korea for the every 10 years during the period from 1919 to 1963revealed as follows;
1 cm, of height in the age of 6-8 years of both sex, 2 cm. of height in the male and 2.7 cm. of heigh tin the female pubertal age group and 1.0 cm. of heght in adult of both sex.
The data of growth acceloration phenomena forthe every 10 )rears from 1880 to 1950 in westerncountries were reported at folloIws ;
1.5 cm. of height and 0. 5kg. of weight in age of 5-7 year.
2.5cm. of height and 2kg. of weight in pubertalage and 1 cm. of height in adult.
These data showed that the growth acceleration phenomena in Korea was similar to those in western countries.
Tanner reported that monarch became earlierusually 4 months per 10 years in western countriesbut author¢¥s data showed less than 1-3 months earlier per 10 years in Korea.During the peaceful period. the growth acceleration phenomena showed even gradual acceleration yearl but since the outbreak of war, the growth acceleration phenomena retarded temporality and thereafter increased again abruptly. which is namely a"rebound acceleration phenomenon. " Such a phe-nomenon was observed evenly during the World war ¥° an ll in western society.
During the Korean war from 1950 to 1953 the growth acceleration rate in children retarted temporality and after the war it increased abruptly asfollowing data. which was similar to those in western countries.
The growth acceleration phenomena in Korean childrlfn for the past 9 years from 1955 to 1964 were as follows ;
5.6cm. of height in the male and 4.0 cm. of heigh tin the female age of 6 year, 14 7 cm. of height in the male and 11.0 cm. of height (the highest after the war) in the female age of 15 year and 2 cm. of height in adult.
The growth retardation phenomena during the wartime was recovered by the rebound acceleration phenomena in Korean children, which occurred in1963 for the 14 year male and in 1964 for the age of 12 year female.
As an geographic influence on growth ace. phenomena the children in Seoul City and in Chei-Juisland were compaired and the growth acc. phonomena in Seoul City was much remarkable than those in Chei-Ju island, also the influences of nutrition .psychology factor, culture and mental stress on the growth acc. phenomena were investigated.
